Palampur is a hill station and a municipal council in the Kangra Valley in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. The upper areas of Palampur experience heavy snowfall and thereby providing plenty of opportunity for tourists to get themselves indulged in winter sports activities or enjoy a stroll through the beautiful tea gardens.

The highest point, Birni Mata temple, is at a height of 2,170 meters. It is close to the Dhauladhar Range. It is in the northwestern region of Himachal Pradesh in north India and is only 30 km from the popular hill station of Dharamshala. Palampur, at a height of 1219 m, is a main spot in the beautiful valley surrounded by tea gardens and pine trees.
 

How to Reach Palampur?

You can reach Palampur by bus or by train until Maranda. The town is well connected by bus routes to neighbouring states. A narrow gauge train is also available and it is a fun travel from Pathankot to Maranda (1 km from main town). Currently (Oct 2014) this train is not running up to Palampur because of a breach. However you can check at the enquiry counter at Pathankot when you come. Palampur is 3 km from Maranda.

By Bus
There is an excellent bus service available from major cities like Delhi (510 km) and Chandigarh (250 km). Himachal Roadways also runs a daily air-conditioned bus service from Delhi to Palampur. HRTC is the best bus to travel from Delhi to Palampur or Vice-versa.

By Train
The nearest broad gauge rail-head is Pathankot(112 km) from where a narrow gauge toy train runs. It is a wonderful experience for those who have ample time (it takes around 7 hrs. from Pathankot to Palampur(Maranda)). Chakki Bank is a station just outside Pathankot that handles a lot of long distance trains arriving from the south and east, as well as Jammu. From here it is possible to take an Auto to Pathankot bus station, and then complete a beautiful 4 hour ride to Palampur on a HRTC bus.

By Air
Kingfisher Red and MDLR airlines are running daily flights from Delhi to Kangra Airport (Dharamsala) which is just 40 km from Palampur. Kingfisher uses a fairly sizeable plane and the baggage limit is 25kg. Flights are prone to climatic conditions and at foggy times of year can be cancelled - plan your trip accordingly. As of April 2012 , there is no airlines flying to Kangra (Dharamsala) Airport
